The NFL tournaments, competition and contest are speech art competitions that are organized for students in high school. This organization is a non profit and non partisan youth league. The main purpose of the National Forensic League is to encourage and motivate secondary school pupils in speech art. It offers college scholarships as motivation to winners in the speech art competitions. Examples of facets in Speech art are like debate, interscholastic debate, oral interpretation of literature, public speaking, community speaking and so on. The National Forensic League plays a major role in high school debate competition and contests.

The NFL boasts of a membership base that is of over one million members in the whole world. All members of the league should abide and honor the National Forensic League code of honor that consists of five tenets. Service, leadership, humility integrity and respect are the five tenets. Students who are enrolled in both private and public high schools can enroll as members on approval by their principal; they also need to pay all the associated fees.

Students earn points by participating in community speaking, speech contest, student congress and interscholastic debate. The National Forensic League grants degrees based on points earned by any particular student. These points also determine the number of students a high school can register in the NFL contests in the presiding years.

Some of the degrees awarded by the NFL include; Degree of merit which is secured on attaining twenty five points; Degree of honor which is awarded if a participant attains seventy five points; Degree of excellence which is awarded on attaining one hundred and fifty points; The degree of distinction which is awarded on attaining two hundred and fifty points; Special distinction degree awarded on attaining five hundred points and the outstanding distinction degree which is awarded on attaining one thousand points.

The League is very keen on empowering young people who are in secondary schools to become ethical individuals, critical thinkers, effective communicators and leaders of a society that is democratic . This are the values encrypted in the National Forensic League mission statement. NFL seeks to increase public awareness in matters relating to debate, public speaking and other speech forms. It does this by organizing contests, completion and tournaments that are carried out countrywide

Winners in these contests are awarded over one hundred thousand dollars in college scholarship. This is a major motivation factor to all participating students. Though there are some life long members, only students in high school are allowed to participate in the tournaments.

Since 1931 the countrywide speech competition has been held through out without fail. The only time that it was not held was during the World War Two period between 1939 and 1945. Students in this in these competitions contest in public forums, story telling, poetry reading, value debate, policy debate, original oratory, and prose reading among other competitions

NFL tournaments, contests and competitions are carried out at national, district and state level. Points that a given students accrues during the district or state competition usually catapult the individual to the national competition. Other than the regular point garnered a contestant can also gain service point. If a member delivers a speech to over 25 adults he gains 25 service points.
